Sophos sprang into action immediately, displaying transient popups when it found a threat and when it finished cleaning up a problem. Sophos claims that its malware scanner can detect a wide range of malware and cyber threats, so I spent a lot of time testing it to see if this was true. When a process accesses the webcam, Sophos simply slides in a transient notification about that access. There's no blacklist or whitelist, and if you're not looking at the screen, you could miss the notification. This level of protection is less effective than simply taping over the camera or using a sliding shutter.
That is, Sophos Home Free would detect about 90 percent of any malware samples thrown at it.
But if you enter your credentials on the fake page, you've given away your account to the fraudsters. Out of all other products tested with my current set of samples, only Malwarebytes and McAfee AntiVirus Plus managed 100% detection. McAfee also scored 9.9, while Malwarebytes managed a perfect 10. Lab results are all well and good, but I always run my own hands-on malware protection testing as well.
Unfortunately, Sophos doesn't appear in current reports from either AV-Comparatives or AV-Test Institute. As you can see from the chart, that's now true for close to half the products we've reviewed. The test labs regularly shuffle the sample sets for their reports, and companies can choose whether to participate. But the absence of independent certification does make it harder for me to determine whether a Mac antivirus utility is effective.
Effectiveness against malware

Avast One Essential for Mac is free, and it’s much more than a simple antivirus. Among other features, it offers ransomware protection, a limited VPN, and a system to check for data breaches. Kaspersky and Bitdefender would both provide equal protection and be lighter loads. It seems they have invested a lot to make a good impression and the user to do the automatic renewal, but then make it very hard to cancel the subscription. The program's CryptoGuard ransomware defenses can spot an encrypting ransomware attack and stop it in its early stages. Should any damage result, CryptoGuard can replace partially encrypted files with copies, rolling back any changes made. But they do evaluate Sophos' business-oriented Intercept X Endpoint software, which uses the same underlying technology and scanning engine as Home Premium.
