I really like that Sophos’s mobile app has a lot of additional features — including an authenticator and a password vault. But I do feel a little disappointed that Sophos doesn’t include some of these extras in the desktop version as well. That said, if you’re looking for a more all-inclusive product with device cleanup tools, a password manager, a VPN, and secure cloud storage, Norton 360 is a better choice. To add a new device for remote management, I had to copy an installation URL generated by Sophos and email it to whomever wanted me to manage their device. First I emailed the URL to my co-workers, so they could install it on their PCs.

With Sophos, you install a small local agent on each PC or Mac that needs protection and manage all the settings from an online console. Both antivirus products score high marks whenever they go through the rigorous testing regimes at the four independent testing labs that we follow. These independent testing labs have hired researchers to put security products through grueling security tests. I always advise running a full scan after installing any antivirus utility, to make sure the system has no preexisting malware conditions. After that initial full scan, you can probably rely on real-time protection to handle any new attacks. If you're at all worried, Sophos lets you schedule a full or quick scan for any day of the week. Sophos sprang into action immediately, displaying transient popups when it found a threat and when it finished cleaning up a problem. Lab results are all well and good, but I always run my own hands-on malware protection testing as well.

Unfortunately, Sophos doesn't appear in current reports from either AV-Comparatives or AV-Test Institute. As you can see from the chart, that's now true for close to half the products we've reviewed. The test labs regularly shuffle the sample sets for their reports, and companies can choose whether to participate. But the absence of independent certification does make it harder for me to determine whether a Mac antivirus utility is effective.
